An open and welcoming centre for Cardiff’s people and visitors.

The historical and striking building in the city centre has been transformed into a new Welsh language and cultural Centre. Bethan Williams, Director of Yr Hen Lyfrgell, answers our questions.

What’s the aim of the centre?

In an open and welcoming centre for Cardiff’s people and visitors, our aim is to promote and celebrate the Welsh language as a living language in our capital. Yr Hen Lyfrgell will offer a range of facilities and activities in a very social environment with the language and culture at the Centre of everything.

What activities/facilities/services will the Centre offer?

At the Centre there will be:

  • Café Bar serving deliicious food and drink from Wales 
  • Bodlon shop selling Welsh produce as well as Welsh books and cards
  • A Mudiad Meithrin creche
  • Welsh for Adults classrooms
  • A flexible showcase and performance space where smaller gigs and comedy nights will be held
  • Conference facilities and Events rooms to be let for parties, events and celebrations
  • Cardiff Story Museum
  • Free WIFI

When will the Centre be open?

Shop opening times:

Monday - Saturday 9am - 5pm

Sundau - 10am - 4pm

Cafe Bar opening times:

Sunday - Tuesday 9am - 6pm

Wednesday - Saturday 9am - late

Where is the Centre?

The centre is situated in one of Cardiff's most iconic buildings - the old library, in the centre of the Hayes.
